Lizzie & Dante by Mary Bly
4.0

A really good, bittersweet romance. I loved the incorporation of delicious food/cooking and the Italian beachside within this book, as romance blossoms between two thirty-something-year-olds. The book didn't sweep me off my feet, but it was interesting. It talks a lot about different types of love -- companionship versus romantic versus familial -- and the concept of chosen families, as many characters experienced US foster systems/some type of parental death or abandonment. I think it was really beautiful that the novel encapsulated these different types of love and show a family of sorts compile together amidst even the threat of death among one of its most beloved members. Because of Lizzie's impending death (not a spoiler since she has cancer), I also like the messages of enjoying love while it lasts and not avoiding an experience because you know it's fleeting.

Also, the artistic diversity in all of the characters was lively. Our main character, Lizzie, is a Shakespearan professor, Rohan is an actor and soon-to-be director (of Romeo and Juliet, which naturally led to many interesting conversations between all the characters), Grey is a horror novelist, Dante is a passionate and visually artistic chef, and a friend named Ruby is a makeup artist. It's a fun hub of many different artistic interests within this cast!
