the past two books i knocked off half a star or two for small reasons– it dragged at times, got a bit boring, etc. but i always knew it was building up to be a 5 star series and the finale did not disappoint.

when you consider the premise of the series, the ending should be of no surprise. it's a recording of all of the events that shaped the entirety of hilo's time as pillar across almost thirty years—the series begins with lan's last few months as pillar and the changeover to hilo, so naturally the only way it could end was with hilo passing it down to his heir and niko's first few months as pillar.

ayt mada deserves a special mention for being one of the most intriguing and complex villains i've read in a long time. despite all she'd done against our main cast i couldn't find it in me to hate her, knowing no peak almost definitely would've gone to the same lengths for the sake of their clan. i particularly enjoyed her relationship/rivalry with shae and found it to be the most interesting character dynamics in this book, with sbae of course being one of my favourite characters.

this was a beautiful series in which you get to see your favourite characters grow from their twenties or even teenagehood to their fifties and sixties, and even their children growing old too, so you really feel by the end of it like you've grown up with them and know them intimately whether you actually like them or not. not to mention the prose at times, particularly the ending, was enough to make a grown man cry.
