The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: N/A

I first came across the quote “My God, I just remembered that we die.” in the book Martyr! and loved it instantly. I was thus delighted to find it in its original home in The Hour of the Star.

Lispector writes with such a distinctive cadence and style, I’m sure I’ll read more  of her and this book again. The afterword in this edition about the challenges in translating her work (including its punctuation) was a great add.

Edit to add: this review might make it seem like I loved this book more than I did? Honestly I think it was great but didn’t necessarily love the whole reading experience. Hard to put my finger on it.
