M Train by Patti Smith
3.0

A bit too overhyped to live up to it's reputation, Patti's collection of memoiric essays takes the reader into a Patti-the-beat-poet universe. Occasionally surreal with it's frequent discussions of dreams and imaginary scenarios illustrating a larger point, staying just interesting enough and having revealing moments of reality bringing Patti back down to earth, to cleverly tie off the mood in the real world with a sardonic observation or mild embarassment. She has great style and presence, and is a wonderful story teller. If you are looking for tales from Patti's '70s music career, this is the wrong place. Instead we got a deeply personal yet notably emotionally distant look at black coffee drinking, brown bread with olive oil eating Patti Smith, as she recounts various tales of her inner life living in modern-day NYC, where she can be found whenever she's not jet-setting off to musical performances or speaking engagements at romantic destinations like Japan, Mexico, French Guiana, and New Jersey.

From what I understand she's remained in New York City throughout the coronavirus pandemic. I'd be interested in an article from her about her life in the year 2020 when so many have had to shut down, quarantine, and evacuate. Not sure about reading another book though.
