Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie

5.0

This book is one of the most heartbreaking but incredible stories I have ever read. I could not have loved Niko more and everything about her was extremely compelling. It was painful to not receive a happy ending but I think that everything stayed true to who Niko was. It is obvious that she was thoroughly thought out as a character and all I wished for was to give her a hug.

I don’t agree with the reviews calling this book trauma porn. Is it upsetting and disturbing at times? Yes. But there isn’t trauma for the sake of nothing. 50 Words For Rain was not exploiting traumatic situations for the sake of ‘shock value’ or entertainment. Everything upsetting that is included propels the story forward and contributes to the book in important ways to build Niko as a person. Disturbing sections were very clearly written with intention and meaning that added to the overall arc of the story.

I loved this book. It may be the best I have ever read and I look forward to reading more from this author.
