Tropic of Stupid by Tim Dorsey

I found this book in the $5 section of a books-a-million, now I see why.
I’ve never heard of the Serge Storm series but based on the book jacket description it sounded like it was right up my alley. Imagine my dismay when I began reading only to wonder every few pages whether the author was snorting white powder the entire time he was writing, or whether he has the worst case of ADHD in the history of mankind.
The book was hard to follow, period, but especially during pages that included the main character, Serge. His sidekick Coleman cracked me up, and I like the side characters and their stories, but after about halfway through the book I began to skim because I couldn’t read anymore of the main character’s crack induced dialogue. It was like the book was written during a manic episode and recorded by a 3rd grader.
I’m sure there are many Tim Dorsey and Serge fans out there, but for the life of me I can’t figure out why.
