The Village meets a gender-bent Rumplestiltskin. The book is more ominous than scary. It will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. Some of the other reviews complained about the ending and how there "wasn't a resolution" (I made the mistake of reading some before I finished, I was so anxious) but I felt like there was a resolution. I normally want to know exactly what happens to my characters and where they end up in life but the ambiguity of the ending of this actually left me at peace.

I was mildly annoyed that as the story begins Ellerie is apparently in the throes of a teen-life crisis. Her twin is being weird, her best friend is being weird and they suddenly aren't talking to each other at all? Like that part literally seems to happen overnight and as the reader, you have no context, and Ellerie kind of gives you some but... not enough to get a handle on it. Otherwise, I love Ellerie. She's the grudging heroine. The girl that no one put many expectations on but at the same time SO many expectations. She and Whittaker's relationship is cute. It does kind of come to a head quickly, but... a lot of things come up very suddenly and need to be handled. It's not ideal but for once I didn't feel like the author was trying to hurry up and end the book like many others do. Erin did a great job weaving this story and not making everything happen too quickly or seem inconsequential.
