Thank you so much to MCD – Farrar, Srauss, and Giroux Books for an advanced copy of Our Kind of Cruelty. All opinions that follow are 100% my own.
What I loved most about this novel is the unusual main character. We travel the book through the eyes of Michael Hayes, a character I knew I should be wary about before I finished the first chapter. He’s successful and comes from a very shady background, but I felt for him in the beginning. Was he being played by Verity? Or was he just coming mentally unhinged? As the story progressed, I slowly started to realize what Our Kind of Cruelty was really about. But even after I finished the final page, I’m still unsure of whose side I’m really on.
Verity is a girl with a wealthy past who may have manipulated Mike for her own amusement. Or maybe she was just a sexually promiscuous young girl who had a strange relationship with the wrong man. Honestly, I don’t know what her deal is. But I know I really didn’t like her. She was privileged and sheltered, and many of the bad scenarios played out in the novel could have been stopped if she wasn’t so damn selfish. But then there wouldn’t be a novel, so I’m grateful she made the stupid choices she did!
To be honest, I really don’t want to go into any more detail. The synopsis on the book is essentially the only thing you need to know before going into Our Kind of Cruelty. It’s no surprise it was chosen for April’s Book of the Month selection. It’s just that good. So I suggest you wait for its release on May 8th and grab yourself a copy. Trust me – you’ll crave it.
