SS Proleterka by Fleur Jaeggy, Alastair McEwan
5.0
Adored this from the opening line on. This is narrative not built on the thickness of description or characterization, but through almost aphoristic inscriptions delicately etched across a blank surface—a plate of glass, say, or an antique mirror in need of resilvering. Chilly, elegant, impassive: it's the type of text that will offer either a glimpse into an almost paralyzing immensity or reveal nothing at all.
"I had no memories of the period before when I learned to write. Sometimes a person's existence starts late. An absent life, or a nonexistence, can last a long time."
