knives_c 's review for:
The Book of Elsewhere
by China Miéville, Keanu Reeves
challenging
dark
mysterious
reflective
tense
slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven:
A mix
Strong character development:
Yes
Loveable characters:
Complicated
Diverse cast of characters:
No
Flaws of characters a main focus:
Yes
1. Unnecessarily hard to read
Likely just preference but I found Meiville's style hard to read with unnecessarily bombastic vocabulary which did not add additional colour to the storybuilding.
2. Strange mix of character development and main plot
I did find the pacing odd. Much of the book was building a solid background of B/Unute, his struggles with immortality, and with the other godkin. The resolution of said conflict with godkin dissipated too quickly after the climax, as if Reeves /Meiville got bored with it.
3. I could not unsee B as Keanu
More of a positive than a negative to be honest 😆
Verdict
Is it worth reading? I'd say yes. Definitely worth a read, but is it a must-read for 2025, that is a solid no from me.
