Chronicle of a Death Foretold
by Gabriel García Márquez
The writing in this is so good. Set in a town in Colombia, a resident, young and rich, and of Arab descent, is murdered. The narrator is interviewing everyone in the town 20 years later to see how it unfolded - how did everyone know and let it happen? You start with well this man slept with a woman who was to be someone else's wife. But you end with, did he? And the mish mosh of everyone's reasons and guilt for letting it happen. Fascinating read.
