Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers

4.0

This was my first Dorothy Sayers novel, and I loved it! I'm a sucker for a good detective story any time, but was surprised by the sincerity and thoughtfulness of the characters' inner conflicts. I was honestly touched by the way Sayers expressed the protagonist's rediscovery of her intellectual joy and professional integrity. But in addition to this, there was plenty of intrigue and drama to go around.

For better or worse, this is the only detective story I have ever rightly guessed the ending of. Hopefully that speaks more of my growing observational powers and less about the plot's predictability.
