A New Earth: Awakening Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart Tolle
1.0
I'm about to ditch this book. It's the most anti-intellectual piece I've ever read. I usually don't go in for the new-age-y type of hype, and I'm not sure why I had this on my to-read list or who recommended it to me, but after listening to about half of the book I can't go on. It seems there are problems with emotions (except primordial emotions?), thought, ego (the big baddie in this book), and who knows what else. And how's this: There is a generic word for all negative emotions: unhappiness. Quick! Someone call up the OED-- we need to revise the dictionary! Or how about this gem: You don't think-- thought is something that happens TO you. (Also, you don't digest, or breathe, etc.-- it seems that if you don't consciously have to direct these activities then "you" are not doing them, they are just happening.) Then there is something called Universal Intelligence. Funny, I can't remember reading any evaluations of our Universal Intelligence. And I won't get drawn into a discussion of the intelligence or lack thereof of the author. He's smart enough to make millions from this fairy tale. I like a good self-help book just as much as anyone else, but this one isn't "helping". I'm sure E. Tolle would have a hey-day with me!! LOL!
