I loved this fourth volume in The Years of Lyndon Johnson. I also love the narrator, Grover Gardner. His voice is perfect. This volume illustrates the way Johnson became JFK’s vice president and was forced into the background. It must have been terrible to give up the power he had had in the Senate and go be a nobody that was treated with contempt and disdain by the kennedy’s and their people. I had not known about the mutual hatred between Bobby Kennedy and Johnson. And then, President Kennedy was shot and Johnson had to take over with no preparation. The book ends basically in the spring of 1964 as Johnson is consolidating power as the new president. Several times, Caro writes about the “next volume,” which has not yet been published. I hope it does come soon!
