I enjoyed reading this book, but Im going to start with the negatives, I found the prose was too simple for my taste and the characters were not nuanced, there was clear delineations between good people, bad people and weak people. You will be able to predict where the plot is going without any real surprises.
However, the premise is really interesting, its a refreshing change of setting for mid-apocalypse fiction and the author does a really good job of creating an atmosphere of dread and tension, as it is unsure who exactly will survive. I was genuinely frightened reading about the harshness of winter when tech suddenly vanishes and the growing desperation of people.
I thought thatEvan would die but Im glad he didn't, it mightve been a stronger beat but Im a sucker for a happy (ish) ending and Im glad he lived.
It entertained me enough that I will be reading the sequel and I would definitely teach this to a class of students, as its apparent flaws of simple prose, moralistic almost story, are actually plusses when teaching grade 10s cause they need something more straightforward.
