I recently read a book with a sort of similar character dynamic (kinda enemies to lovers, the guy wants to be a writer but gets in his own way, the guy has a mental health issue). Anyway, that one was a lot more lighthearted and, for me, a lot less impactful. I mean, this novel was one tragedy after the next! But I don't think it was gratuitous. I especially appreciate Misbah's throughline. It really makes the story bigger than a romance - it's about family, both blood and found.
