Skeletons at the Feast
by Chris Bohjalian
I used to hate historical fiction, but then I discovered writers like Susan Vreeland and Chris Bohjalian, who use real history and a compelling story to enlighten readers while entertaining them. I had read another Bohjalian book and felt so-so about it, but this one kept me hooked from the first page and made me care so much for the characters. It also taught me a part of history I had not learned in school. Bohjaliam came to my town for an author's symposium and turned out to be one of the friendliest authors I've ever met. He loves his readers and is likely to remember you when he sees you again. If you ever have a chance to hear him speak, jump at it. He offers great insight into his books and his writing process. This book was a hit in my book club, too - we had a great discussion.
