Thieves' Gambit by Kayvion Lewis
3.0

3.5/5 stars. *forgive misspellings of names as I listened to the audiobook.

For what it was (a YA mystery romance), it was an enjoyable read. Devro’s betrayal was predictable. However, less predictable was the reveal about Ross’s mom. It was the ultimate betrayal to learn that her mom had successfully manipulated and stymied Ross from forming any relationships beyond those with her aunt and mother. I’m less interested in reading future sequels, only because I’m not sure if the “budding relationship turned enemies” trope is compelling enough to sustain the sequel. For me, the mystery and fun of the Gambit was the most appealing part of this first book. Furthermore, some of the side characters were more engaging and entertaining than the two primary protagonists.
