Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
5.0

I didn't want to read this at first because once again I committed the cardinal sin of judging from its cover that it was a vapid beach read. I still think the design team should have thought that through, but now, maybe because I love the book, I see some satirical genius in the cover too. Just putting that out there in case anyone else is judgey like I was! Because while this book is in fact fun and readable, it's also legit. Although not overly lyrical, it is well-written and poignant. I can recognize much of the absurdity in the humor from Semple's time with Arrested Development. But I must explain to you many people with normal-ish lives and families, that life actually can feel this absurd for the rest of us. Where Arrested Development is truly off-the-wall, I think Semple has toned down the satire perfectly for this book. The epistolary style, though a bit contrived in its explanation, added much charm for me. Go get this book and bring it to the beach with your head held high!
