Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

5.0

This is definitely one of the best romance books I've read. (Full stop).

The characters are so relate-able and down to earth. There is no grand mystic about what it really means to be a writer. Instead, Williams brings the reader along as Eva struggles through being a single mom to her mature and audacious 12-year-old, attempts to overcome writers block up against a deadline, and silently battles with an invisible disability. As if she doesn't have enough on her plate Eva quickly finds herself sucked into the gravitational pull as The One Who Got Away saunters back into her life.

But there is so much more under the surface of this story. While I love watching the romance and flirtation between Eva and Shane, this book is so much more interesting when you look at what is below the surface. Williams uses Eva's heritage to tell the story about how we pass down generational trauma. Eva is drawn to write the real story of her life: her family history. It is her chance to unravel how Black history can be lost when there is no one to tell it. She has spent so much

You see in Shane's story how Williams tells the story of young black men that wind up stuck in a revolving door of the prison system. On the other side of the system he seems himself as an example to other Black youth. He wants to help them but he also learns that there are consequences for putting himself first after he's accepted that position.

Ultimately, the romance is beautifully written. Who doesn't love a story about second chances? When you learn that what you thought was abandonment was really something else. After 15 years, they have grown and overcome so many of their own demons, but nothing has dulled their chemistry. The pain that brought them together was never fully healed. This is the story of how they both come to face that they have each created extremely successful writing careers as they have attempted to heal themselves, but now it is time for them to both to start a new journey.

I had such a hard time putting this book down. I loved all of the characters. Williams did an incredible job of balancing heavy topics and still maintaining a light rom-com feel. 10 out of 10 this one is a real gem!
