Red Hood: The Hill (2024) #0 by Shawn Martinbrough

1.0

I thought, or maybe hoped, this plot line had died with the end of the Red Hood and the Outlaws series, but alas it lives on to torment me. I’ve been missing Jason so I decided to bite the bullet and read this dang thing. So far, not so good.

I think this issue is an amalgamation of the storyline from Outlaws. Despite having read it before it’s still a chaotic mess that makes little sense. The Hill is amidst a gag war, but the players are introduced in such a rash and overwrought manner that it’s hard to make out if they have any motivations and personality other than wanting to kill each other. We have no background for these people nor these characters. Perhaps there are underlying reference points that Americans will understand, but I’m lost.

I mean, some guy proudly announces he’s Tommy, and I’m like, am I supposed to know you? So confusing.

Jason’s not even in the book much, which is terrible. But what’s worse is that the art is heinous. Jason looks inconsistent and downright ugly. Like come on, noticeably all the ladies still look gorgeous, but Jason is a caricature.

Please someone explain to me why Strike is wearing pants so tight she’s got a right wedgie? Like why?

Don’t even get me started on how Red is so dismissive of Strike and her team’s abilities and their right to protect their city. Just because you got trained by Batman doesn’t mean you can boss other people, who also have skills, around. So annoying.

I don’t know where this book is headed. I do like that there’s another street level look at trying to fix the issues in the Bat Universe, but the writing needs to be a lot less amateur than this issue. Unsure if it will be though.
