First things first: this is in no way a thriller. It was a slog to get through and way longer than it had to be. Too many detailed descriptions of food and long inner monologues.

It was hard to relate to the characters and I often couldn’t even understand why they acted the way they did. A part of that is probably because of how different the Japanese culture described in this book is to my own, but I guess it’s also a problem with the writing. It was interesting to learn about how restrictive the societal expectations of women are. However, I found both the conclusion and moral of the story to be underwhelming.
