mockingjay is just one traumatic incident after the other… and while I enjoy some drama and real war stakes, there was no reason for literally everyone to be unalived or tortured ok 😩

after the cliffhanger of CATCHING FIRE, katniss is thrust into the revolution, forced to be the mockingjay and the face of the rebels. and wow, what a ride it is - she goes from being manipulated in the games, to being manipulated by her friends, and now being manipulated by the rebels, who definitely don’t have the best intentions in mind 🥴

what worked best for this installment was the no-sugar coating stakes of what it costs! it’s hard to fathom that katniss, gale and peeta are only seventeen at times because of how war hardens people in life or death situations… and I loved how unfortunately relatable it is in today’s society…

peeta’s story was tragic, and while I understood the implications of why suzanne wrote this subplot in, it was still hard to read - and even harder to watch katniss go back and forth on who she needed more in her life, not even who she had true feelings for 🥴🥴

overall, this was a solid conclusion and a realistic look at war and revolution, but the ending was a bit too rushed and solved overnight for me. it gave season 8 of game of thrones vibes at times with senseless deaths & rushed endings, but this is still one of the best dystopian books of our time!!
