When Calls the Heart
by Janette Oke
“But I refused to mope about for the evening. My little ritual with teacup, familiar chair, and a favorite Dickens story went a long way toward improving my outlook.”
When Calls the Heart is short, Christian historical romance fluff. If that's what you're looking for, you'll probably enjoy this. If you're looking for something more, this probably isn't for you. Actually, it might be a bit generous to call it a romance, as the love interest doesn't really show up until about 50% of the way through the book.
With that said, it's an easy and relatively enjoyable read. Elizabeth heads out to Western Canada for a teaching job and most of the book involves the day to day of getting settled in to the rugged frontier and her war on the mice in her home. Most of the conflict comes from a misunderstanding (though not exactly a miscommunication), so if that's something you're not a fan of, you may not like this, either.
Overall, it's sweet and cute, if not a little predictable.
