The Door
by Magda Szabó
This book is so good, I hated it. It was easy to start, almost impossible to finish. So raw, so sad, so memorable. I really had enormous difficulties with ending it, I cried reading it at home or on the subway. I loved the way the characters were built and how they were described, but most of all - most of all I loved how majestically well-defined they were. Even if the book deals with really shapeless things, like love, friendship, abandonment, trust and fear, the characters still were so crystal-clear - with all their flaws.
To quote the author, I still don't know how she fitted so much living into one book. This is a story that will stay with me for a long, long time.
