Okay wow, so according to Goodreads, I started this book on March 23rd (I personally think I started it much earlier) and jeez louise did a lot of stuff happen in the meantime. I will chalk up my slow pace and general apathy to this book with extenuating circumstances.

That being said, I do love Ng’s writing style — her prose is beautiful, flows effortlessly and she is a master of creating little windows to see the rest of the story through before she reveals everything. I just couldn’t get on board with the characters, who I really didn’t like, and I was pretty turned off by (spoiler!) the affair that takes place throughout the novel.

I think I enjoyed Little Fires Everywhere more — I found it more compelling and exciting, a page-turner, although I haven’t watched the TV series yet — but I wouldn’t knock this one! Definitely give it a try if you haven’t already!

Also, big TW: suicide & self harm!!
