Whilst this is an interesting exploration of how autocracies are interconnected, I felt there was a lot of nuance missing, such as about the West’s involvement with autocracies.

Applebaum discusses a conspiracy theory about bio-labs in Ukraine and how China promoted this conspiracy theory to try to deflect attention away from the idea that COVID-19 came from a lab in Wuhan but does not mention that this is also a conspiracy theory.

I just don’t think it’s true that “Most Parisians, Madrileños, New Yorkers, and Londoners do not have strong feelings about the political leaders of Russia, China, Iran, and Venezuela” (no citation)

The choice to not use superscripted numbers for the references and have the bibliography refer to page numbers is poor. It makes the reader way less likely to look at them, which makes me suspicious about the quality of the research.
