The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
5.0

very dense, descriptive and archaic. but idc - the scarlet letter is a gem of a book about compassion, autonomy, and change. hester touched me so deeply when i first read this. for her singular transgression she faces severe ostracization within the unforgiving bounds of Puritanical society. yet, she was an extraordinary model for teenage me of how a single, solitary woman can hold unwavering self-kindness, quiet dignity, and remain soft even in the midst of darkness.

favorite line: “we could hardly do otherwise than pluck one of its flowers, and present it to the reader. it may serve, let us hope, to symbolize some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow.”
