Shopaholic Ties the Knot by Sophie Kinsella
3.0

With all the drama in this book I'm surprised Becky didn't actually call off the wedding. The wedding planner Luke's mother (Elinor) has hired to help Becky threatens to sue if she cancels their contract, and it's a lot of money. All Becky wants is to be at home and please her Mother, even though the Plaza wedding is her wedding from heaven. Becky believes that the Mother/Daughter relationship is worth more than a Plaza wedding, but she wasn't even asked if she'd like a wedding planner! Becky's just been dropped in the deep end and she doesn't know which wedding to cancel or who to disappoint.

Becky really seems to be split in two minds over the wedding. When she's in New York, all the wants is the Plaza wedding... but when she's home, she wants the small, cosy wedding her mother is organising. It's a disaster waiting to happen! I can really understand why she's so torn. Her mother has always been so supportive in the past and she doesn't want to break her heart by cancelling her only opportunity to host a wedding... but if she cancels the Plaza wedding she'll be sued a lot of money... It's almost like asking, which is more important, family or money?

Although I only gave this book three stars, I did enjoy it and it had me gripped throughout. I felt it was fast-paced; Becky was constantly on a time limit for cancelling one of the weddings. There was a lot of drama and stress, for example, she's trying to keep the situation only to herself - she doesn't even tell Luke or her friends, they all have to figure it out for themselves. I can understand why she didn't confine in someone, but I think it would have made everything a bit less stressful for her to get it off her chest. Most of her issue seems to be keeping it all to herself and trying to cope with it all.

Another well written story, the emotions and stress come across clearly to the reader. The indignation of not being able to cancel your own wedding without a penalty is quite real whilst your reading! The distraction of having to figure the situation out while trying to work as a personal shopper in a high-end designer shop also comes through very well. I just think Kinsella has a real talent for creating 3D characters, the reader actually feels a need to comfort and console Becky which I think is quite rare in books these days.

As always, Becky manages to come up with a solution that will please everyone. You have to admire her creative mind. I'd recommend this book to people who like chick-lit and romance novels, or stories with hard dilemmas.
