The Canopy Keepers
by Veronica G. Henry
this was good! it was a unique idea that had me gripped at the beginning then began to lose me toward the middle and end. syrah ultimately discovers a hidden society beneath the redwood trees in the national park. a group has decided they want to wipe out humanity due to their contribution to climate change. syrah has to figure out if she will remain loyal to humans or nature.
the premise is so good and the author built it up to make it really well, but it ended up falling flat. the author relies on similes too much. it started becoming so noticeable that it pulled me out of the story. i would have liked to see more character building. we are introduced to someone who is, I'm assuming, the love interest? they have a maybe two conversations in passing, he kisses her, then she says she loves him. it was very odd.
the book was paced well and I was gripped by the plot but sometimes it became a little muddled. certain things would be brought up as if the author had already told us but was never mentioned before. other things were mentioned multiple times for no reason.
ultimately this book was good. I did enjoy the premise and characters but it fell flat.
