Wolfsong by TJ Klune

More like 3.5

I really wanted to like this book more. There are just some things I cannot control in myself that annoy me in writing and dialog plays a big role in that. Klune's writing is beautiful! Let me get that out of the way. Absolutely gorgeous prose with cool artistic flair and great relationships. But the dialog! That was my biggest beef. It was very unrealistic sounding, as if the writing couldn't decide between being super poetic or just straight colloquial. I think you can definitely blend the two, but the juxtaposition especially here felt so abrupt in a lot of situations that I couldn't get past it.

The plot was also interesting, but again, something felt off. It's a very repetitive story with a lot of space covered in a paragraph or so (like a year going by in a chapter or something like that). Again, this can work well but I felt like I was missing out on so much vital character development, especially in the second half of the book. It was a solid 4-star book for me up until then.

But, I really did enjoy the characters. I think they're all fleshed out well, even those who aren't as relevant. Maybe my problem is that I'm more interested in the side characters than the main characters of this book in particular, though I know the POV changes with each book. I'd definitely like to continue the series.
