Greek Myths: Meet the Heroes and Heroines, Monsters and Gods of Ancient Greece by Jean Menzies

4.0

This book works as a basic introduction to Greek mythology or a quick reference guide to refresh your memory. It also provides some background on the way these myths were delivered and Ancient Greek culture. As the book is published for younger readers the writing style is kept simple and to the point. Unfortunately, this also means that the viler parts (rape, violence) are glossed over and that there is no critical analysis on the treatment of women or other issues. I know, that's not what the book was aiming to do, but I still wish it had been more critical (because I know the author, beloved booktuber Jean Bookishthoughts, usually is).

The book is lavishly illustrated by Katie Ponder who uses simple shapes and textures to mimic the Greek art style. I especially loved her use of colors and the coffee table format made every page a joy to look at. I could've done without the captions added to most images though, as they only repeated what was already said in the (not very long) text passages.
