The writing is wonderful, but Martyr suffers from fundamental storytelling problems. The form feels haphazard, and the characters have a tendency to learn lessons when it’s convenient to move the story forward. Again, the writing style is jaw-droppingly beautiful, but the cliche dependent narrative left me feeling a bit cold.
