Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin
4.0

Giffin has a way of crafting affairs to make them seem acceptable and probable for even the most seemingly strong relationships and "good" people. I first read her "Something Borrowed" and "Something Blue" novels and cheered for Rachel and Dex in their affair, because Darcy was such an unlikeable character, and Dex wasn't married. However, in this case, Tessa (the jilted wife) was a character we got to know well - and to root for. Having the story told from the perspective of the wife and the "other woman" was an interesting viewpoint. I began with positive views towards Valerie, and I think the author even wanted the reader to pity her (single mother, no friends, sick child), but as she continued to develop a relationship with a married man I lost respect for her. Her complaints of loneliness became an annoyance, since she got herself into that mess. I applaud Tessa for being able to confront her and move beyond the affair. Also, in some respect, I also understand Nick because he confused Valerie's vulnerability with real love - but I can't imagine being able to forgive him. Despite all that, Giffin was somehow able to craft a happy ending.
