Queen's Peril
by E.K. Johnston
Interesting to get a prequel to the first book, covering Padmé’s ascension into Queen Amidala and the beginning of finding and bonding with her handmaidens! I love them all and their unique talents. Not to mention there’s some sapphic romance here which definitely made me perk up! I love when Star Wars authors go beyond heteronormativity. And it felt very natural here, which I loved.
"You can't put that many teenage girls together and not expect them to scheme. Or kill each other. Frankly, you're lucky they appear to be doing the former."
It was interesting to see the girls squabble a bit more as they tried to find their footing as a team in this book. This definitely skews more young adult since our main characters are in their early teens. So while I loved it and don’t mind reading within a YA genre, some adult enjoyers of Star Wars may find their teenageness a bit grating. I thought it helped showcase the weight of being a young queen and how, yes, these girls are still children, but they are undoubtedly loyal to Padmé and it’s a wonderful thing to see.
I did not expect the way the ending wrenched my heart, oof. Anything involving Qui-Gon really hurts me now!! Owie!! I care about this fictional galaxy too much. But I always enjoy reading more and more about it - I will happily take another!
