Evan Adler is medically retired from the NHL in order to focus on his mental health, a step he thinks everyone judges him for—but everyone from his parents (Shae and Ellie) to his twin brother (Owen) respects him for his choice. He had no idea what his future would hold but he returned home to Nashville to go to school and RA for the Bellevue Boys Hockey Team. We even get to see some of our old Bellevue favorites make an appearance as one of them returns to coach and mentor the newest group of players. He also takes up being a trainer for the girls gymnastics team. Enter Callie Pearce, who we met in the IceCats Series.

Callie is the sister to Aviva and is currently a gymnast at Bellevue. She had a crush on Evan while she was home and couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw him running at Bellevue and, later, taping up her ankles.

I loved how Toni tackled the prospect of Mental health inside the professional sports arena in an expanded form. We touched on it in Owens book—and she really got to expand on what Evan was feeling and experiencing in his own way here. And she didn’t just look at how Evan and Callie’s relationship dealt with his neurodivergence, but how his whole family dealt with it as well.

This story was a great addition to the Adler crew and I cannot wait to get more!
