Miranda in Milan by Katharine Duckett

Interesting The Tempest retelling/sequel. It's fairly short, it's sapphic, and Prospero is the bad guy which I thought he ought to be after reading the play.

The novella does some effort to address the racism of the play, which I appreciated but felt could have been taken even further, especially by actually having interactions between Miranda and Caliban, with Miranda making amends and listening to Caliban's story.

The plot and the drama were a bit much at times but then again we're in a Shakespeare retelling so like, it's not like it doesn't fit. It's just very dramatic and very on the nose at times.

I felt like the relationship between Miranda and Dorothea/Duriya could have been developed better, it's a pretty quick romance. Once again. Shakespeare. The Tempest. Instalove was already a thing in the original, it's just not my jam.

Overall I had a really good time, I appreciated the idea and what the novella was doing with the original story. Not everything was to my taste and some stuff could have been expanded upon, but I would definitely recommend it as a queer retelling.
