The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

Did not finish book.

The book is a Mexican gothic re-imagination of Rebecca (at least, that’s what it reminds me of). The overall premise of a young newlywed woman moving into her basically stranger husband’s estate is right up my alley. It promises ghost activity and strange circumstances with the deceased first wife of Rodolfo, the husband. I was excited for this!

Now, we get to the execution of the plot…. Not for me, to say the least.

The heavy ghost activity begins and right away tops out ~20% in. We just met the characters but there’s doors banging, heavy chills, and physical abuse right away. I personally like a slower build up. I enjoy the “is there a ghost or is she imagining this” as an appetizer for the first half of the book, but with this one, there was no doubt about a demon in the house.

You learn the house is evil literally 20% in.

Then, there’s the matter of a priest. The heroine invites two priests to exorcise her home while her husband is away. The older one doesn’t believe her, of course. But the younger one? Yea, he’s hot. We hear all about how the heroine wants to fuck the priest. And him? He wants to fuck her too…. There’s no subtle hinting at a romantic connection when Padre mentions how he can’t stop thinking about this distressed woman digging her nails into his back about 50%. Yup.

So, overall… You can guess who the bad guys are early on. The tension between Padre and heroine was too weird and full on. And I was just honestly bored and struggling to finish.
