The Break by Katherena Vermette
5.0

This novel was heartbreakingly, powerfully, beautiful. I absolutely loved the way the author wove the stories together. At first, I worried that I wouldn't be able to keep all the characters and their relationships straight, but they became clearer with each page. And the more I read, the more real the characters because, and the more difficult it was to put the book down. The bonds these women share, through being sisters, daughters, mothers, and grandmothers, is what gives them their strength and their courage. It was a story of strength, both in a group and individually. Even the characters who didn't have the fortune to have strong bonds with family or friends (like Pheonix for example) still managed to find the strength and perseverance to keep going. Though, in the case of Pheonix, she needed much more help then she was given.

I loved the language used by the author, and the poetic description. The prose is beautiful throughout, but is especially poignant when the reader finally gets to hear a bit of the story from Flora's point of view.

There is so much more depth to this book than I believe I can cover in a Goodreads review. This book delves into the racism and stereotypes faced by Canada's Aboriginal people, for example, from several different perspectives, both systemic and individual. It also explores abuse, trauma, assault, revenge, perseverance, and what it means to fight for those you love.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It will make you laugh and cry in places, but it will also make you pause and think deeply. I absolutely loved this book.
