The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo
4.0

Leigh Bardugo is one of my favorite writers and an automatic buy. While Bardugo painted a vibrant world in Madrid during the Spanish Inquisition and another complex female heroine, this probably isn’t my favorite of her titles. I enjoy historical fiction but my unfamiliarity with the history and language here kind of took me out of the story. The ending felt suddenly fairytale-ish, rushed and vague, and we never really learned more about Luzia’s power. I thought the whole book was building up to how she will master this final power, and then we didn’t really get to see it. It didn’t really seem to leave an opening for a sequel, though I’d certainly read one to learn more about what happened. Still, my least favorite Leigh Bardugo is still a great read.
