Roomies by Sara Zarr, Tara Altebrando

1.0

I should have loved this book.

I chose it because I read Story of a Girl and wanted to read more of Sara Zarr’s writing. As I started reading, I was pleased to learn that one of the characters lived in San Francisco, a city I love, and that the girls were waiting to start their first semesters at UC Berkeley, where I also had a light, dorky, hey roomie correspondence before the start of term.

However, I lost interest in this book about 60% through. I never looked forward to reading it and was bored by both characters. I never liked Elizabeth, and Lauren got more and more boring as the book went on. The characters became too similar and uninteresting, and I didn’t care how any of their concerns reconciled. This might be more interesting for a high school or college student, because the premise couldn’t overcome the uneventful narrative for me. I LOVE books for their tone and rambling prose, but I lost all interest in the characters and plot of this one.
