Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows
by Balli Kaur Jaswal
Full disclosure, I thought I DNFed this one, but then a friend chose it for bookclub, so I came back. This book is new and old world, finding your own identity and connecting with your culture. It's a really interesting mix of things set in a literacy class for Punjabi Widows and based on misunderstanding. Misunderstanding honestly might be the main theme of this book.
This book is off to a good start for two main reasons: Nikki (the main character) is super likeable and the whole theme is just so quirky and unexpected. Erotic stories for widows?!? Huh. Moving on, there were some scenes full interesting punjabi culture and several times I found myself googling and asking friends for some cultural context. There is some really geat character development both with Nikki and with the windows in her class. It's a joy to see the relationships develop as trust and friendship grow.
I like that Nikki and Jason met at the temple and were traditional in that way--but they smoke and see french films and he is divorced. I loved the nuances of their relationship.
I didnt really like the stories themselves which are interspersed throughput the book, but I love the premise. Unexpectedly diverse stories. I will let you figure that one out. I was pleasantly surprised that there was some queer representation!!
The first 2/3 of the book were sort of monotonous with very little action or excitement BUT 2/3 of the way through the book, everything takes a big change that I did not see coming *but you might if you read the back.
Overall I feel that Erotic Stories For Punjabi Widows is very well written and also probably more geared toward middle aged women (who I think would really like it).
