While I think there were structural elements of the story that were interesting, after watching the anime, I was a little disappointed in the content of the novel. The constant repetition of passages, though they make sense within the story, frustrated me when they were being read rather than watch, especially when portions were repeated verbaitum rather than being colored by our protagonists new experiences. I also just liked the protagonist a lot less when we were getting his direct thoughts about the world around him; obviously he was a college boy the whole time but he really feels like a college boy in the novel. Overall these elements, combined with the 'life-lesson' tone the text took on really made it work better as an anime than a book for me.
