“The veil is thinner here, the flow of magic easier. It Eddie’s in the nexuses, but there is magic in every stone, every bit of soil, every leaf of old elm. And it is hungry.” P423
This is a book of dark magic, based on Yale’s tombs, buildings where the secret societies meet (https://youtu.be/Knt3x6hX02c). Bardugo was a student there and always wondered what sinister history would have made them more interesting. In the Ninth House, they each are masters of a different kind of magic, governed by the Lethe House. Alex (Galaxy) has found herself in a world of trouble and is recruited to be a member of Lethe and go to Yale, because she can see grays, spirits of people in the in between. Her partner Darlington disappears, and a college student dies, and she becomes a detective to find out what is happening.
This is one of the darkest and grossest novels I have ever read. Some scenes I almost couldn’t read and when I finished them, I thought - what was that?
At 480 pages, it moves quicker than a lot of books, but isn’t a quick read. I’ve wanted to read it since it was a B&N pick, and I’m curious about the second book. Glad I got to buddy read this one with others.
“That was what magic did. It revealed the heart of who you'd been before life took away your belief in the possible.”
“Mirror magic is all about reflection and perception. A lie isn’t a lie until someone believes it. It doesn’t matter how charming you are if there’s no one to charm.”
