For a series that focused so heavily on the ways society as a whole can be oppressive to those who don’t fit societal ideals, it felt weird that the Trademaster was built up as the big bad in this installment of the series. Especially since he wasn't really focused on in the last book when he was introduced, and he didn’t show up in this book until halfway through. To me, that decision undercut the impact of the series, though I did think the writing overall was fantastic. Something that will stick with me is one character learning her father died when a newchild was given his name. Just, the casual cruelty and alienation that that kind of society produces. You get just enough social interaction to be well adjusted. Your social ties can be cut according to higher authority any time it pleases them. That, to me, was way more impactful.
