The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

4.0

A quick easter weekend read - I received this in my first owlcrate book box and honestly I was very tentative at first (books with pentecostal pastor sons don't scream READ ME). But as the adage goes - Never judge a book by its cover.

The story is low key and simple, it follows Dill, Lydia and Travis - three senior high school students from Forrestville, Tennessee - and their final year of high school. The journey was sweet, heartbreaking and humbling all at once.

The author's quote truly sums up the book nicely "I wanted to write about young people who struggle to lead lives of dignity and find beauty in a forgotten, unglamorous place. Who wonder what becomes of dreams once they cross the county line." - Jeff Zenter

A touching young adult contemporary that left me feeling both giddy and out of sorts. I cried. I smiled like an idiot. It was wonderful.
It was a story with a lot of heart and it's small town setting was a big part of that charm.

Not bad for a debut novel.
