The Loop by Jeremy Robert Johnson

This is a brutal horror story, in the best possible way.

There's a bit of a quandary, with good horror stories. Often, saying anything about the story spoils the reveal. This is even more true in books that don't rely on one grand 'gotcha', but instead rely on characters slowly realizing the scale and horror of whatever it is that's actually going on.

The initial premise, what the characters know in the first chapter, isn't actually that interesting (yet). And if I tell you anything else, I'll be ruining part of the experience.

So I won't.

Instead I'll just say that this book uses its ideas well. That the forces at work are actually terrifying, are explained just enough to make that terror worse, and that the ending is fantastic, justifying the whole story rather than undercutting it.

Also it's a lot of fun, if you're the kind of person who finds adrenaline raising horror fun.
