The Starless Crown by James Rollins
2.0

I found this to be a little irritating to read. It seemed like the author had spent many years thinking up all these things to put into his fantasy world (he does in fact say he has been building this world for some time) and had to make sure everything was included. There were some interesting lands/creatures/situations that could have been put to better use but the story moved right on, leaving these things underexplored and easily forgotten.
There is a lot of action but sometimes the characters stop and dwell on something that is not urgent while monumental events are about to occur and they have yet to tell anyone else about them. It reminded me of the old westerns where the hero stops to kiss the girl while the bad guys are breaking down the door. That bothered me then and it still does today.
I don't feel the need to read the sequels.
