I'm a little bummed on this one - a dark Tarzan retelling sounded excellent, but I was left wanting more after reading this. Jag was the star of the story, and what made this enjoyable. It felt like there were missed opportunities to expand on the captor/captive relationship during the start of the story, and maybe show more tension or complexity to their romance? Dane was a lacroix in essence. He brought nothing to the story or the relationship and I had to look up his name because I kept getting it wrong.

As for Jag, I loved his character arc. He opened his mind to new social dynamics and relationship dynamics, worked through his childhood trauma, retrained his brain to accept help and to be vulnerable. He was such a wild card character. At times out of control and doing something crazy, then shedding a tear or showing a lot of emotions. I loved his duality. I also loved that while he was this protector alpha man, he was open to change and dismiss any toxic masculinity. I thought it was nice hearing a bit about his backstory, only knowing a tiny bit from book one on his character.

Overall, Jag was the highlight of this story. I think there was some missed opportunities in the story to make Dane a dynamic character and to explore the Stockholm syndrome trope more. The romance and chemistry wasn't there.

Still will be continuing with the series, hoping the next one includes both couples from the previous books!
