The Thief of Always
by Clive Barker
I think that something is lost when a children’s book is read for the first time as an adult. I enjoyed this bizarre, creepy little dark childhood fantasy and wish I would have read it when I first really fell in love with the magic of books, around 3rd grade.
Part Alice in Wonderland, part Tim Burton, part Roald Dahl, part... maybe Stephen King at like 30% capacity, and if his target audience was 5th graders. Well-written and a good addition to my middle-grade library shelf. 3.5 stars as an adult first-timer, and if I had read this 30 years ago it probably would have been reread often as a gateway drug to grown-up scary stuff.
